Where to Stay in Da Lat: Which Areas You Can Walk and Which Need a Car

1. Decide whether you will walk before you pick a hotel

In Da Lat the useful question is not which neighbourhood, it is whether you plan to walk or to call a car. We pulled the coordinates of 245 hotels from a booking site and measured the drive to Da Lat Market📍Map. The median came out at 4.1 minutes. With a car, almost every address in the city is five minutes from the centre.

On foot the picture changes. Only 49 of those 245 properties are within a 10-minute walk of the market. The other 196 mean ordering a Grab several times a day.

Filtering by district name does not help here. The booking site splits Da Lat into three areas only, and 163 of the 245 properties carry the same administrative label, Xuan Huong.

Pick your band first

Three things to check on the booking page

• Review count. 111 of the 245 properties have fewer than ten reviews, and scores in the nines are everywhere.
• Heating and blankets. January lows reach 11.7C before dawn.
• Parking. 112 properties list parking of some kind.

Once that is settled the rest follows. Walking means giving up some room size and some quiet; driving means spending time on the road every evening. A Da Lat day usually runs out to a waterfall or a farm in the morning and back into town at night, so where you are in the evening is what you will notice.

2. Where the hotels actually are

We took every property with coordinates from one booking site and ended up with 245. Map data for the same box lists 478 places to sleep, so treat 245 as the set you can book online tonight.

Sorted by straight-line distance to Da Lat Market📍Map, the median is 1,656m. 82 properties fall inside 1km and 139 inside 2km. More than half of the city’s rooms sit in a circle two kilometres wide.

Distance from the market

Why everything is bunched up

The centre of Da Lat sits on a handful of hills around Xuan Huong Lake📍Map and the market. When we measured 38 sights for our Da Lat travel guide, 26 of them were within a seven-minute drive of the lake. The town is small, so the hotels crowd into the same few streets.

That makes Da Lat different from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, where you really do choose a district first. Here you choose how many metres from the market you want to be, and whether a hill sits in between.

What the gap between 478 and 245 means

The 478 figure from map data includes guesthouses that never list online, homestays, and places that have closed. The 245 are bookable and their coordinates check out. If you are happy walking in and asking at the desk, the real choice is wider than either number.

A few distances worth memorising: the lake and the market are 600m apart, the old railway station is 1.7km from the market, and the intercity bus terminal is 2km away. Everything you will use in town fits inside that.

3. Within a 10-minute walk of the market

These 49 sit around the Hoa Binh area📍Map, spread over five streets: Phan Boi Chau, Nguyen Chi Thanh, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Bui Thi Xuan and Phan Dinh Phung. This is the range in which you can go out for a bowl of noodles at night and walk home afterwards.

What you get

You can drop your bag and leave immediately. The market, the night market, the cafes and the bus ticket offices are all inside walking range, which makes the first evening and the last morning of a short trip much more useful. Pickup vehicles still reach the top of the lane on an early flight morning.

The downsides

Nights are loud. The night market is next door and the noise runs until the stalls fold up around midnight. Parking is hard too: the lanes are narrow and steep, so ask before you book if you intend to rent a car.

The streets are not interchangeable

Phan Boi Chau and Nguyen Chi Thanh sit directly behind the market and have the shortest walks, but parts of them are too narrow for a large vehicle. Nam Ky Khoi Nghia is a block higher and quieter. Phan Dinh Phung is long, so two hotels with the same street name can be very different distances out.

Bui Thi Xuan climbs west from the market. On a map it looks like 400m; on the ground there are steps and gradients, and this is where walking times double most often.

4. Right on the shore of Xuan Huong Lake

Lake view turns up in a lot of Da Lat listings. Measured to the water’s edge rather than to a point in the middle, 23 properties are within 200m, 43 within 300m and 73 within 500m.

What is on the shore

The closest addresses to the water are modest ones: Nhat Nguyen Hotel at 60m, Thang Lap Hotel at 74m, Seian Hotel at 84m. Being on the lake does not push the price up here. Among five-star properties, Dalat Palace📍Map is the nearest at 222m.

The shore and the walkable band overlap

33 of the 43 properties within 300m of the water are also inside the 10-minute walk of the market. Because the lake and the market are only 600m apart, you do not have to choose between them.

Whether you can see the lake from the room is a separate question. There is often another row of buildings between the shore road and the hotel, and the view depends on the floor and the direction. Check whether the booking page lets you specify a view, and look at guest photos of the window.

5. One hill out, a 25-minute walk

Move a little further from the market and a hill gets in the way. These 66 are still walkable, but the return trip is uphill.

Examples

Dalat Palace shows the pattern clearly. It is 734m from the market in a straight line, which looks like nothing on a map, but the walk goes around the lake and up a slope and takes 18 minutes. By car it is three.

When this band works

If your days run on tour transport and you only come into town in the evening, this is the comfortable choice. For the same star rating the rooms are bigger and quieter than the ones right behind the market. With heavy luggage you only need a car on arrival and departure day.

Crazy House📍Map keeps ten rooms inside the attraction itself. After closing time only guests are left, which makes it quiet, but the market is a 22-minute walk away.

6. Straight-line distance understates the walk by 36 percent

Map distance is not much use in Da Lat. Routing 177 properties inside 2.5km of the market along real pavements, the median walking distance was 1.36 times the straight line. For 25 of them it was over 1.5 times.

The biggest gaps

Why the numbers move so much

The market building sits at the bottom of a bowl and everything around it is on a slope. Streets follow the contours, so covering 200m often means going the long way round. There are one-way sections, and some lanes that look like shortcuts end in a staircase.

It depends who is walking

On your own with a daypack, eight minutes and ten minutes are the same thing. With a wheeled suitcase or a small child they are not: the wheels do not roll well on the gradients, and where the pavement runs out you end up in the road.

Travelling with older parents, rule out the uphill addresses first. Ten minutes on the flat and ten minutes up a hill are different walks.

Checking takes a moment. Put the hotel name and Da Lat Market into a map app and tap the walking route. If the app shows an elevation profile, you will see exactly where the climb is.

7. Within a 10-minute drive

This is the biggest group. It runs outward along Hung Vuong, Mai Anh Dao, Nguyen Du and Ba Thang Tu, and the drive to the market is three to eight minutes.

Getting a car

Waits get longer in the evening and when it rains. Twenty minutes for a car outside the market on a wet night is normal, so order early if your evening is running late.

Mornings and late nights

Outside the centre, fewer noodle shops and cafes open early. Check whether breakfast is included: 82 of the 245 properties have a restaurant on site.

Convenience stores are further away as well. Not many places stay open past midnight out here, so buy water and snacks in town on your way back.

8. The old railway station area and the Lang Biang road

One of the three areas the booking site uses for Da Lat is the old railway station. There are 19 properties within 600m of Da Lat station📍Map.

Around the station

These 19 are quiet. They sit a layer back from the main roads in a residential grid, and if you plan to take the tourist train to Trai Mat, the morning is easy. The market is a three to four minute drive.

Two drawbacks. None of the 19 is within a 10-minute walk of the market. And the median review count is two: most of them are small and recently opened, so reviews will not tell you much.

The better-documented options here are MerPerle Dalat Hotel, 425m from the station with 195 reviews, and Dalat Cadasa Resort at 387m.

Towards Lang Biang

North of the centre the road climbs towards Lang Biang mountain📍Map. There are 15 properties out this way and the median drive to the market is seven minutes. Most are three-star villas and farm stays; Ladalat Hotel is the five-star option.

You need a vehicle here. In exchange the rooms come with gardens, the nights are dark enough for stars, and an early start for Lang Biang or the coffee farms saves you half an hour.

9. The resorts around Tuyen Lam Lake

South of town the road drops to Tuyen Lam Lake📍Map. The resorts sit in pine forest around the water, 11 to 21 minutes from the market by car.

What is out there

They are closer to the airport than the town is

Lien Khuong Airport📍Map to Da Lat Market is 34.5km and 33 minutes. Tuyen Lam sits on the way up, so Swiss-Belresort is 24.3km and 30 minutes from the airport and Terracotta is 28.2km and 32 minutes. You can go straight there on arrival without passing through town.

Check the cable car hours

One way into the area is the cable car from Robin Hill down to Truc Lam Monastery📍Map, a 2,267m run. A return ticket is 150,000 dong for adults and 120,000 for children; one way is 120,000.

The timetable changes by day. Monday to Friday it runs 07:30 to 12:00, stops for an hour, then runs 13:00 to 17:00. Saturday and Sunday it runs 07:30 to 17:00 without the break. Last boarding is 16:45.

10. The converted villas on Tran Hung Dao

Da Lat still has villas from the 1920s and 1930s, and some of them take guests. Most of them stand along Tran Hung Dao street📍Map.

The main ones

• Dalat Cadasa Resort. 16 Tran Hung Dao. Several villas run as one property. Four minutes from the market by car.
• Ana Mandara Villas Dalat. 2 Le Lai. An entire hillside of villas. A 25-minute walk or a five-minute drive from the market.
• Dalat Palace Heritage Hotel. 2 Tran Phu, open since 1922.
• Du Parc Hotel Dalat. 15 Tran Phu, across the road from the Palace and a price tier below it.

What to look for

Ceilings are high and rooms are large. Old buildings also vary a lot in damp and in soundproofing. Some rooms have floorboards that creak; in others the walls are thick enough to weaken the phone signal.

The area is uphill from the centre, which makes going down easy and coming back less so. Take a car on days with luggage and walk down in the afternoon.

Rates and breakfast

A converted villa costs a tier more than a town hotel of the same rating. There are few rooms, so they sell out first in high season and weekend rates run above weekdays. Breakfast is often served in a separate building, which means crossing the garden in the morning.

Heating varies building by building. Some rooms have kept the original fireplace, others just have an electric heater. For December and January it is worth confirming the room type before you pay.

11. Higher star ratings sit further from the market

Split the 245 by rating and the positions run backwards. The more stars, the further out.

Only two five-star properties are walkable

Of the 14 five-star hotels, the ones inside a 10-minute walk are Signature The Central Da Lat at 315m and Sandals Mimosa at 397m. The other twelve need a car, and three of those are out at Tuyen Lam, more than 15 minutes away.

Why it works out this way

A pool and a garden need land, and there is none left around the market. Buildings in the centre are narrow and tall, built to add rooms rather than space. That left the cheaper properties in the middle of town.

19 of the 65 two-star properties are within a 10-minute walk, twice the five-star share. If you want to save money and still walk, that combination is the one Da Lat offers.

Four-star in town or five-star outside

Ten of the 47 four-star properties are inside the walking band, among them Colline Dalat, Sandals Flora, TTC Hotel Ngoc Lan and Muong Thanh Holiday. Rooms and breakfasts are a step below the five-star places, but you are not ordering a car every evening.

If you do book five-star, plan fewer trips into town. One day at the resort and one day in the centre halves the driving.

12. Sleeping next to the night market

The Da Lat night market📍Map runs down a slope 216m from the market building. In the evening the street fills with stalls and people.

How close the hotels are

Inside 300m you get TTC Hotel Da Lat at 64m, Da Lan Hotel at 84m, NA NI at 92m, Marguerite Hotel at 95m, Nice Dream Hotel at 105m, Royal Dalat Hotel at 107m and TTC Hotel Ngoc Lan at 114m. Open the window and the stalls are audible.

Good and bad reasons to be this close

Going in and out several times an evening is easy. Eat a banh xeo, go up and rest, come back down. With small children it helps: you can leave the pushchair in the room.

The cost is sleep. The noise carries until the stalls are packed away and the street is cleaned, and delivery vehicles start early. If you are a light sleeper, one block further out changes the night completely.

When to book

Because the crowd is domestic and weekend-shaped, booking timing matters. Friday and Saturday nights go first, and during Tet and the 30 April holiday the central hotels sell out.

Flower season overlaps too. The pink mai anh dao blossom peaks from early January to early February and pulls in Vietnamese visitors. For those weeks, book two or three months ahead.

13. Nearly half of the properties have fewer than ten reviews

Scanning Da Lat listings, almost everything scores in the nines, which makes choosing hard. The counts explain why.

Review counts

The median is 12 reviews. 111 of 245 properties, 45 percent, have not reached ten. Only 20 have passed a hundred.

Most of them opened recently

Of the 197 properties with an opening year on file, 141 opened in 2020 or later and 105 since 2023. There has not been time for reviews to accumulate.

That creates a trap. 36 properties have fewer than ten reviews and a score above 9.0. Three guests giving full marks produce a ten.

How to read the scores

• Look at the number of reviews before the score. Under 30 is a small sample.
• Check that something was written in the last six months. A place that opened recently is not the same in month one and month twelve.
• Look at guest photos of the room. Official photos date from the opening.
• The 20 properties over a hundred reviews are the tested ones: Dalat Center Residence (594), Goldient Boutique Hotel (307), Colline Dalat (206), MerPerle Dalat (195).

What the reviews keep saying

Three words recur in Da Lat reviews: cold, damp, uphill. Where all three appear together, winter will be hard work. Where hot water and extra blankets get a mention, December and January will be fine.

New properties differ most from their photos. Guest pictures of the window and the bathroom show the real state. If the score is high but there are no guest photos at all, it is reasonable to wait.

14. How you arrive decides where you should sleep

You reach Da Lat by air or by road, and the choice changes how far you drag your bag on day one.

Arriving by air

Lien Khuong Airport is 34.5km from the centre, 33 minutes by car, on a national road that climbs the Prenn Pass. 91 of the 245 properties offer an airport pickup and 72 also run drop-offs.

The airport bus is operated by Phuong Trang and ends on Le Thi Hong Gam street, inside walking distance of the market. With light luggage and a walkable hotel, that is the simple option. Check the posted fare at the airport counter.

Arriving by road

Ho Chi Minh City is 300km away and Nha Trang 135km. Sleeper buses use the intercity bus terminal📍Map, 2,052m from the market. Only ten properties sit within 500m of it, so nearly everyone needs one more ride.

Some operators shuttle passengers into town in a smaller vehicle. Give your hotel address when you book and they will tell you. Intercity options are set out in how to travel around Vietnam.

Coming on from Nha Trang or Saigon

From Nha Trang the drive is slow on the mountain sections, so allow three and a half to four hours. Leave late in the afternoon and you arrive after dark, which is a reason to put the first night on a main road that is easy to find. From Ho Chi Minh City the overnight sleeper gets in around breakfast.

Arrival time against check-in time

Night buses arrive at five or six in the morning and check-in is usually two in the afternoon. That is eight hours. 184 of the 245 properties store luggage, so the bag is fine, but if you want a shower and a bed you have to book the previous night.

The reverse happens on the way out. Checkout is midday and the airport is 33 minutes away, so an evening flight leaves a long afternoon. Ask about a late checkout; plenty of places will sell you one.

15. Nights drop to 11.7C

Da Lat sits at 1,500m. No month has a daytime high above 25.3C, and pre-dawn lows reach 11.7C in January and 13.2C in December. Even in June, the warmest month at night, dawn is 16.4C.

What changes compared with the rest of Vietnam

Booking in Da Nang or Phu Quoc, you check the air conditioning. In Da Lat you check whether the room warms up. Many Vietnamese hotels have no heating at all, and booking sites do not list heating as a facility.

Questions worth asking before you pay

• Is there a heater or an electric blanket?
• Can you request extra blankets?
• Does the hot water hold up late at night?
• Do the window frames leak air?

Converted villas have high ceilings and warm up slowly. Newer buildings in town often have double glazing and feel warmer. In December and January that difference decides how well you sleep.

Clothes and damp

Long sleeves are enough in the daytime and you want a jacket at dawn and after dark. The swing inside a single day can be more than ten degrees, and clothes left hanging in the room do not dry.

That is why damp comes up so often in reviews. Older buildings hold the cold in the walls and the bedding feels heavy. Where guests mention smell or mould more than once, book elsewhere.

The wet months

Rain peaks in September at 283.4mm across 24 days and bottoms out in January at 9.1mm across 2.2 days. In the wet months shoes and clothes stay damp. Check whether the room has a drying rack or an iron and whether laundry is available.

16. Parking and renting a scooter

If you are renting a car or driving up from another city, check parking first. 112 of the 245 properties list parking, 54 of them with a private car park and 25 pointing at a public one nearby.

What the facilities look like

More indoor pools than outdoor ones is a Da Lat detail. In the coastal cities the ratio is the other way round. If you are booking for the pool, check which kind it is.

Renting a scooter

Plenty of town hotels rent scooters. Da Lat is steep, though, and the surface is slippery in the rain. Licence and helmet rules are covered in getting around Vietnam.

Car space is tightest at the lane properties in the centre. A parking icon on the booking page sometimes means scooters only, so state the size of your vehicle and ask.

Lifts and floors

Town buildings are narrow and tall, and stairs to the fourth or fifth floor without a lift are common. With heavy luggage or bad knees, confirm there is one. If the listing does not say, guest photos usually show the staircase.

Buildings on a slope also confuse floor numbers. The entrance from the street can be the third floor with the rooms below it. If you booked for the view, ask which way the room faces.

17. What each price tier buys

Da Lat is inexpensive by Vietnamese standards. Here is what changes as the rate goes up.

Saving money without losing the location

19 of the 65 two-star properties are within a 10-minute walk of the market. Dropping a tier can improve the position here. Just verify the state of the room in the reviews.

What more money adds

Five-star properties are mostly outside the centre. Paying more buys garden, view and quiet, while the location moves further out. If you plan to be in town most evenings, a four-star in the centre fits better.

Conditions to read before you pay

Cancellation terms vary by tier. Cheaper rates are often non-refundable, and Da Lat weather does make people change plans, so this matters more than usual.

Some properties take a cash deposit. Handing over a passport at check-in has mostly stopped, but a photocopy is still common. Cash and card practicalities are in money and payments in Vietnam.

18. Matching the area to your trip

The same city suits different addresses depending on how long you stay and who is with you.

With children

Inside 300m of the night market you can go out and come back several times an evening. Ask for a courtyard-facing room to get the sleep back. If a pool matters, remember the count: nine indoor and six outdoor across all 245 properties.

With older parents

Rule out the climbs first. The lakeside road is close to flat, while the lanes behind the market are short but steep. Booking inside the 10-minute driving band and using Grab is easier on the knees.

Travelling alone

A town hotel with a lot of reviews is the safe pick. The walk home at night is short and the main streets have people on them. If you plan to rent a scooter, check parking and helmet hire before booking.

19. Common mistakes when booking Da Lat

If your trip is short
