Grab vs Xanh SM: Which Ride App Is Actually Cheaper in Vietnam?
The two apps that replace haggling with a taxi — what each does, real fares, how to book, and which to pick in Da Nang and beyond.
- Grab: the big all-rounder — cars, motorbikes and food, English app, upfront fixed price, pay cash or card.
- Xanh SM: Vingroup’s all-electric rival (since 2023) — clean VinFast cars & e-bikes, uniformed drivers, often cheaper promos.
- Why use either: the price is set in the app, so there’s no haggling and no taxi-meter tricks. Both are GPS-tracked and safe.
- Need: mobile data (an eSIM) to run the app. Typical bike hop ~15,000–30,000 VND; a short car ride from ~30,000–50,000 VND.

In Vietnam you almost never need to flag down a taxi or argue over a fare — you open an app, see the price before you book, and a car or motorbike comes to you. The two names to know are Grab, the region-wide super-app, and Xanh SM, the all-electric challenger launched by Vingroup in 2023. This guide explains exactly what each one does, what rides really cost, how to book step by step, and which to choose — plus the safety habits that make both far better than hailing a random taxi. 1. Grab vs Xanh SM: Which Should You Use?
Short answer: install both and compare the price each time — they’re free, and on any given trip one is often noticeably cheaper. As a rule of thumb:
- Use Grab for the widest coverage, the best English experience and when you also want food delivery — it’s the safe default everywhere in Vietnam.
- Use Xanh SM for clean, quiet all-electric cars, fixed professional service and frequent promo prices — especially strong in bigger cities like Da Nang, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Both do the same core job: you set your pickup and destination, the app shows a price up front, and you pay by cash or card. The days of arguing with a taxi driver are over.
2. Grab: The All-Rounder
Grab is Southeast Asia’s ride-hailing super-app, and the one most travellers already know. In Vietnam it covers cars, motorbikes and food, all in one English-language app:
🚗 GrabCar
A private air-conditioned car — best for groups, luggage, the airport or rainy days.
🏍️ GrabBike
Ride pillion on a motorbike — the cheapest and fastest way through traffic for one person. A helmet is provided.
🍜 GrabFood
Food delivery from thousands of restaurants — handy on a rainy evening or a lazy resort day.
The price is fixed and shown before you confirm, so it never changes mid-trip. You can pay cash or link a card, and the in-app chat translates messages to your driver.
3. Xanh SM: The All-Electric Challenger
Xanh SM (“Green SM”) launched in 2023 and grew fast. It’s run by Vingroup — the company behind VinFast electric vehicles — so the entire fleet is electric:
- Xanh SM Taxi: clean, quiet VinFast electric cars with uniformed, professional drivers. You can hail one in the app or sometimes flag the bright cyan cars on the street.
- Xanh SM Bike: electric motorbike rides — the EV answer to GrabBike.
Riders like it for the new cars, the calm electric ride and frequent promo fares that often undercut Grab. Coverage is excellent in major cities (Da Nang included) and still expanding in smaller towns.

4. Bike or Car: Which to Book
Both apps let you choose a motorbike or a car. Here’s how to decide:
| 🏍️ Bike (GrabBike / Xanh Bike) | 🚗 Car (GrabCar / Xanh Taxi) | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | 1 person, light bag, beating traffic | Groups, luggage, airport, rain |
| Price | Cheapest (~half the car) | Still cheap by global standards |
| Comfort | Open air, fast, a bit thrilling | Air-con, private, relaxed |
| Weather | Bad in rain/heat | All-weather |
5. Real Prices & How Fares Work
Fares are calculated by distance and time and shown up front. Prices rise a little at peak hours and in the rain (surge), but there are no hidden extras. Rough 2026 guide:
| Trip | Bike | Car |
|---|---|---|
| Short hop (1–3 km) | ~15,000–30,000 VND | ~30,000–50,000 VND |
| Across town (5–8 km) | ~35,000–60,000 VND | ~60,000–110,000 VND |
| Airport ↔ city centre | ~50,000–80,000 VND | ~90,000–160,000 VND |
That’s roughly $0.60–$2 for a bike and $1.50–$6.50 for most car rides — a fraction of taxi prices back home. Tipping isn’t expected, though rounding up is a kind gesture.
6. How to Book, Step by Step
It takes about a minute:
- Download the Grab and/or Xanh SM app and sign up with your phone number (you’ll need mobile data — see tips below).
- Set your pickup — drag the pin to exactly where you’re standing, or pick a landmark. Accuracy here saves confused phone calls.
- Set your destination and choose Bike or Car. The fixed price appears.
- Confirm, then watch the driver approach on the map. Check the name and plate number match before you get in.
- Pay cash (have small notes) or by linked card. Done.
7. Safety, Data & Common-Sense Tips
App rides are already one of the safest ways to get around — every trip is GPS-tracked and the price is locked in, which sidesteps the classic overcharging tricks. A few habits make it even smoother:
- You need mobile data. The apps won’t work without it — sort an eSIM or local SIM on arrival (see our transport & safety tips and pick up a data plan first).
- Confirm the plate and driver shown in the app before getting in — especially for cars.
- Wear the helmet on bike rides; the driver carries a spare for you (it’s the law).
- Pin your pickup precisely and stand somewhere the car can actually stop.
- Avoid unmetered street taxis and anyone who waves you over outside the airport — apps exist precisely to skip that hassle.
