Noi Bai Airport to Hanoi: fares, pickup points and what changed in August 2026

1. There is no flat fare at Noi Bai, and the kerb is now split by vehicle type

Da Nang and Cam Ranh both post a fixed price to the city. Noi Bai posts a per-kilometre rate for each taxi firm instead, so the meter settles the total. Anyone arriving with a number in mind from another Vietnamese airport will find that number does not exist here.

A second change landed on 3 August 2026 at 07:00, when the airport and the border police put a new traffic plan into force. The lanes in front of both terminals are now assigned by vehicle type. Contracted taxis stop directly outside the doors. A car booked through Grab or Xanh SM does not, and you walk to a car park to meet it. 2. What changed on 3 August 2026

The airport operator and the airport police applied a new traffic plan from 07:00 on 3 August 2026, following a decision by the Prime Minister. The airport published the full 25-page document. Three parts of it matter to an arriving passenger.

Vehicles with nine seats or more, and commercial vehicles generally, may not enter lanes 1, 2 or 3 in front of T2 at all. The document also states that unregistered greeters and taxi touts will be filtered out of the public hall. That is one more reason to walk past anyone who approaches you first inside the terminal.

P1 at T2, P2 at T1

The car park numbers differ between the two buildings. Arrive on an international flight and your Grab waits at P1. Arrive on a domestic connection and it waits at P2. Following the app map towards whichever P looks nearest can send you to the wrong side of the airport, so confirm which terminal you are standing in first.

3. The options side by side

Of the six ways into town, only the buses have a published price. Taxis publish a rate per kilometre, and Grab quotes a live fare in the app.

The gap between a contracted taxi and a Grab is roughly 150,000 VND. Split between two people that is the price of a couple of coffees, so the question to settle first is whether you want to pull your bags out to a car park.

4. Contracted airport taxis and the official per-kilometre rates

Six taxi firms hold a contract with the airport, and only those firms may pick up from the terminal lanes. The official notice states that firms without a contract may drop passengers off but may not wait for or collect return fares at the halls or car parks.

What the airport actually publishes is a rate, not a total

The posted table gives the rate from the 2 km mark onwards, in force since 1 March 2025.

Multiply 27 to 30 km by those rates and you land in the 400,000s. Treat that as an estimate rather than a quote: the official table omits the flag-fall charge, and motorway tolls are added separately. Watch the meter and keep the toll receipt.

The spread between the cheapest and dearest firm is 1,700 VND per km, so about 50,000 VND over the full run.

5. Grab and Xanh SM load from a car park

An app booking at Noi Bai will not meet you outside the doors. The August traffic plan moved commercial vehicles without an airport contract into dedicated car parks. Work out where you are walking before you open the app.

Fares sit between roughly 200,000 and 350,000 VND for a four-seat car. An airport pickup surcharge shows in the app, and a toll is sometimes added on top. Unlike the metered taxis, the total appears before you accept, so there is nothing to watch on the way in.

You need data before you can book anything

Walking out to a car park and opening an app only works if your phone is online at that moment. The SIM counters in the arrivals hall have queues, and their hours vary late at night. Landing already connected removes that step.

6. What a pre-booked car gives you

Booking ahead is less about the fare than about the twenty minutes after you clear customs. A driver is standing there with your name, and there is no car park to find and no app to open.

Travelling light and alone, this is money you do not need to spend. Arriving late with a child, with as many suitcases as passengers, or with no previous trip to Hanoi behind you, the 150,000 VND saved by doing it the other way stops being the main number.

7. Public bus routes and fares

Few visitors take the ordinary city buses, but route 86 is a reasonable exception. It ends at Hanoi railway station and passes Hoan Kiem Lake and the Opera House on the way, so there is somewhere useful to get off if you are staying in the Old Quarter.

Routes 86 and 68 are the high-quality services, with luggage space and proper seats. The rest are commuter buses and awkward with a large suitcase. None of them stops at the door of Hoan Kiem Lake📍Map, so budget for one more short hop to the hotel after you get off.

8. Hanoi’s electronic bus ticket, and why you must tap off

Since 25 June 2026 every subsidised bus route in Hanoi runs on an integrated electronic ticket. The part that affects a visitor is how the fare is calculated.

Pay by card or QR and failing to tap off means the system charges you to the end of the line. On an airport route that is not a small difference. The app is called Thẻ vé giao thông Hà Nội, and paper monthly passes stopped being valid on 1 July 2026.

9. Where the official sources disagree with each other

The Vietnamese and English pages of the airport’s own website list different bus timetables. Neither carries a revision date, so there is no way to tell which is current. Both are set out below rather than picking one.

Fares diverge too. Plenty of travel sites give the bus 86 fare as 45,000 VND while the airport’s own notice says 50,000 VND. Carry enough small notes to cover the higher figure.

There are gaps on the taxi side as well. The official rate table has no flag-fall figure, and the 8-seat column for Xanh SM is blank. Filling in numbers the airport has not published would make this page look more certain than the source material is.

10. The minibus and the free inter-terminal shuttle

The Hai Van minibus costs 90,000 VND per person and drops at several points around the city. Route NB01 runs via Ring Road 2 and NB02 via the newer urban areas, both every 45 minutes. Board at halls A and E on the first floor of T1, or at the east and west ends of the first floor of T2.

Between T1 and T2 the shuttle is free

This is the electric bus service for connecting passengers moving between an international and a domestic flight. Easier than walking it with luggage.

11. How T1 and T2 are laid out

Noi Bai runs domestic flights from T1 and international flights from T2, in separate buildings. An international arrival lands at T2. A domestic connection from Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City lands at T1.

Arriving at T2 you collect bags on floor 1, clear customs and step straight out to the arrivals lanes. Contracted taxis sit at pillars 5 and 16, public buses at pillars 12 to 15, and Grab cars at car park P1. The pillar numbers are signed in large type, so following those is enough.

The airport hotline is 1900.636.535, staffed around the clock. Since the 2025 administrative reorganisation the official address reads Xã Nội Bài, Thành phố Hà Nội. Some booking confirmations still print the older Sóc Sơn form, which refers to the same place.

12. Arriving after dark

Plenty of long-haul services into Hanoi land in the evening or later. By then the buses have stopped and Grab drivers are thinner on the ground than during the day.

Two things hold up at that hour: the contracted taxis at the kerb, and a car booked in advance. Decide which before you fly. Deciding in the arrivals hall means standing there with no data, trying to open an app.

Carry some cash out with you

Some drivers do not take cards, and the exchange counters keep their own hours at night. A small amount of dong in hand keeps every option open. Anyone who approaches you first inside the terminal is unlikely to be from a contracted firm. Common scams in Vietnam collects the versions travellers actually run into.

13. How your district changes the trip

Noi Bai lies north of the city, so the district you booked changes both the distance and the fare. The West Lake area is closer to the airport, and the Old Quarter and everything south of it is further.

14. Going the other way, city to airport

There is one extra rule on the way out: nothing may stop for more than five minutes on the departures level. Drivers are also required to stay within two metres of the vehicle. Allow for that when you plan the goodbye.

If you are meeting someone and using a car park, parking runs 9,000 VND for the first ten minutes and 4,000 VND per 30 minutes after that for cars up to nine seats.

15. Once you are in Hanoi

With the bags dropped, Hanoi is a walking city. The Old Quarter and the streets around Hoan Kiem connect on foot.
