Where to Stay in Da Nang: Best Areas & Neighbourhoods (2026)

Beach or city? A plain-English guide to Da Nang’s stay areas — who each suits, the trade-offs, and whether to base in Da Nang or Hoi An.

Last updated: June 2026
Where to stay, in 30 seconds

  • The default: My Khe beach & An Thượng — sand, cafés, restaurants and most of the mid-range and beach hotels. Best for first-timers.
  • For local life: Hải Châu / Han River (city centre) — markets, cheap eats and sightseeing, a short ride from the beach.
  • For quiet / resorts: the Son Tra north end or the southern Non Nước beach — calmer, big resorts, but you’ll rely on Grab.
  • Good news: Da Nang is compact and Grab is cheap, so no area locks you out of anything. Pick a vibe, not a compromise.

Da Nang stretches along about 10 km of white-sand beach on one side and the Han River on the other, so “where to stay” really means “which side, and which neighbourhood.” The good news: the city is compact and a Grab ride across town costs a couple of dollars, so no choice traps you. This guide walks through each stay area — who it suits, the trade-offs, the nearest beach and how connected it is — plus the classic question of whether to base yourself in Da Nang or nearby Hoi An. (Once you’ve picked an area, our Da Nang hotels & resorts guide names specific places to book by budget, and the complete Da Nang guide plans the rest of the trip.)

1. First, How to Choose Your Base

Da Nang’s stay areas really come down to one question: beach side or city side?

  • Beach side (My Khe / An Thượng): wake up by the sand, surrounded by cafés, brunch spots and restaurants. The choice of most visitors.
  • City side (Hải Châu / Han River): markets, local eateries and sightseeing on your doorstep, with the beach a 5–10 minute ride away.

Because the city is compact and Grab / Xanh SM rides are cheap (often under US$2 across town), you’re never cut off from the other side. So choose by the vibe you want to wake up to rather than worrying about being “too far” from anything.

💡 Short trip or first time? Default to the beach side (My Khe / An Thượng) — it’s the easiest, most walkable base with the most to do on foot.

2. My Khe Beach & An Thượng — the Main Tourist Base

This is where most visitors stay, and for good reason. My Khe is the long white-sand beach along Võ Nguyên Giáp road; just behind it, An Thượng (the so-called “Western town”) is a dense, walkable grid of cafés, brunch spots, bars, massage places and restaurants.

  • Pros: beach steps away, very walkable, the widest choice of restaurants and cafés, and everything from $25 mini-hotels and apartments to beachfront five-stars.
  • Cons: the most touristy area, and some streets get noisy at night.
  • Best for: first-timers, beach lovers, couples and digital nomads.
💡 Want a swim before breakfast? Read our My Khe beach guide for the best stretches and when the water’s calmest, and the hotels guide for specific places to book here.

3. Hải Châu & the Han River — the City Centre

On the west bank of the river, Hải Châu is the real, working city: Hàn Market and Con Market, local cơm and noodle shops, the pink Cathedral, and the Dragon Bridge that breathes fire at weekends.

  • Pros: local food and markets at your door, the cheapest eats, very central for sightseeing, and river/bridge views.
  • Cons: not directly on the beach — it’s a 5–10 minute Grab or bike ride across the river.
  • Best for: foodies, budget travellers and anyone who prefers local life to a resort bubble.
💡 Basing here puts Da Nang’s street food on your doorstep — pair it with our Da Nang food guide.

4. Son Tra Side & the North — Quiet & Resorts

The northern end of the beach, towards the Son Tra peninsula and the marina, is calmer and greener, with several big resorts and easy access to the Lady Buddha at Linh Ứng Pagoda.

  • Pros: quieter and more spacious, sea views, close to Son Tra’s nature and viewpoints.
  • Cons: farther from the An Thượng café-and-bar buzz, so you’ll use Grab more.
  • Best for: couples, peace-seekers and resort stayers who don’t need nightlife on the doorstep.
⚠️ “Beachfront” and “near the beach” are used loosely. Check the actual walking distance to the sand on a map before you book up here.

5. Near the Airport & the South (Non Nước)

Two more options for specific needs:

  • Near the airport (central Hải Châu-ish): Da Nang’s airport is unusually central, so a hotel nearby is handy for a one-night stopover or a late arrival / early flight. You’re still only minutes from the city.
  • The southern beach (Non Nước, near the Marble Mountains): this is where the big, spacious luxury beach resorts cluster. Lovely and calm, but isolated — you’ll Grab into town for most meals and sights.
💡 The far-south resorts suit a “barely leave the pool” holiday. If you want to explore, you’ll spend more time and money on transport — factor that in. The hotels guide covers the best of these resorts.

6. Area Comparison at a Glance

Side by side:

Area Vibe Best for Watch-outs
My Khe / An Thượng Beach + cafés, walkable First-timers, beach, nomads Touristy, some noise
Hải Châu / Han River Local city & markets Foodies, budget, sightseeing Not on the beach
Son Tra / north Quiet, resorts, nature Couples, peace, resorts Need transport for nightlife
Non Nước / south Big luxury resorts Resort holidays, families Isolated, Grab everywhere

And by traveller type:

You are… Stay in…
A first-timer My Khe / An Thượng — easiest, most to do on foot
On a budget Hải Châu — cheap eats and cheaper rooms
After nightlife & cafés An Thượng — bars, brunch, massage all walkable
A family or resort-seeker Non Nước south or a Son Tra resort — space and pools

7. Da Nang or Hoi An — Where Should You Base?

A very common dilemma, since Hoi An is only about 45 minutes south. The short version:

  • Base in Da Nang if you want a beach + city mix, nightlife, the airport, and easy day trips in every direction. It’s the better all-rounder and transport hub.
  • Base in Hoi An if you’re after the lantern-lit old town, a slower and more romantic pace, tailors and riverside charm. It’s smaller and quieter.
  • Or do both — a few nights each is a popular and easy combination (they’re a short, cheap transfer apart).

8. Getting Around & Booking Tips

A few things that make choosing (and booking) easier:

  • Getting between areas: Grab and Xanh SM are cheap and everywhere; a cross-town ride is usually a dollar or two. Many visitors also rent a motorbike. See our transport & ride-app guide for how it works.
  • Check the real distance to the beach. “Near the beach” can mean a 15-minute walk. Look at the hotel pin on a map.
  • Book beach-side early in peak season (summer and holidays); the best An Thương and beachfront places fill up.
  • Read recent reviews for noise, cleanliness and whether the “sea view” is real — Da Nang builds fast and surroundings change.
⚠️ Prices and neighbourhoods change as the city grows. Use this as a guide to the vibe of each area, then confirm specific hotels and current prices on your booking site of choice.

Frequently asked questions

Q. What’s the best area to stay in Da Nang for first-timers?
The My Khe beach and An Thượng area. It’s the most walkable base, with the beach, the widest choice of cafés and restaurants, and hotels for every budget all within reach on foot.
Q. Should I stay near the beach or in the city in Da Nang?
Beach side (My Khe / An Thượng) if you want sand, cafés and an easy walkable base — the choice of most visitors. City side (Hải Châu / Han River) if you prefer local markets, cheaper food and sightseeing. Either way, the other side is a cheap 5–10 minute Grab ride.
Q. Which is the cheapest area to stay in Da Nang?
Hải Châu, the city centre, generally has the cheapest rooms and the cheapest local food. Beachfront and An Thượng tend to cost more, though you can still find budget mini-hotels a few streets back from the sand.
Q. Where should I stay in Da Nang for nightlife?
An Thượng, just behind My Khe beach, has the most bars, late-night cafés, restaurants and massage places within walking distance. The Han River / Dragon Bridge area is also lively at weekends.
Q. Is Da Nang walkable, or do I need transport?
Within an area like An Thượng you can walk everywhere. Between areas (beach to city, or out to the southern resorts) you’ll want a Grab, Xanh SM or a motorbike — all cheap and easy.
Q. Where should families stay in Da Nang?
The southern Non Nước beach resorts and the larger Son Tra-side resorts offer the most space, pools and kid-friendly facilities. Families who want to be near restaurants and the walkable beach strip often prefer My Khe / An Thượng.
Q. Should I base in Da Nang or Hoi An?
Base in Da Nang for a beach-and-city mix, nightlife, the airport and day trips in every direction. Base in Hoi An for the lantern old town and a slower, more romantic pace. Many travellers split a few nights between the two — they’re only about 45 minutes apart.
Q. Is it worth staying near Da Nang airport?
Only for a short stopover, a late arrival or an early flight — and even then the airport is so central that most city hotels are just minutes away. For a real holiday, choose by area (beach or city) rather than airport proximity.
